Challenging your mind is one of the eight dimensions in our exclusive My W Life wellbeing program. We encourage you to keep expanding your awareness of the world around you. We will challenge your mind with creative ideas and activities. Westminster Oaks offers a wide range of great courses through innovative partnerships with Florida State University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Sharpen your pencils to learn something new – here are just a few examples:
- “French Baroque and Rococo Architecture”: Discover the architectural expressions of the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI. This class will also cover allied arts, such as painting, sculpture and furniture design, and their lasting impact on architecture and art throughout early modern Europe.
- “World War II in Europe”: On December 6, 1941, the Russians hurled back the Germans, saving Moscow. One day later, the U.S. entered World War II. In this course, we will fight the war in Europe from 1941 to the German surrender in a small schoolhouse in northern France in 1945. We will battle across the sands of North Africa, up the Italian peninsula, across the beaches of Normandy, out of the skies over Arnhem, and through the dense woodland of the Bulge. Join the Desert Fox, “Old Blood and Guts” Patton, Marshal Zhukov, and General “Ike” as we examine the last four years of World War II in Europe.
- “Are You My Mummy?”: Addressing bone, bodies, and disease, this introduction to paleopathology shows how the latest scientific and archaeological techniques can be used to identify the common illnesses and injuries that humans suffered in antiquity. In order to give a vivid picture of ancient disease and trauma, results of the latest scientific research that incorporate information gathered from ancient documents will be presented. This comprehensive approach to the subject throws fresh light on the health of our ancestors and on the conditions in which they lived, and it gives us intriguing insights into the ways they coped with the pain and discomfort of their existence.
